Proper Kidney Stone Treatment Options
If you have ever suffered having a kidney stone, you probably know how painful it can be and usually, the kidney stone treatment that the urologist will choose will usually be the least invasive, based upon the size of the stone.
Unfortunately, most of the remedies to remove the stones are not really less pleasant than the stones themselves are. When your stone is small and the doctor believes it will pass by itself, he may prescribe pain killers, tell you to rest and take in plenty of water. You will know when you are drinking adequate fluids by the color of your urine. When it is clear, that is an indication that you are drinking adequately. Usually, kidney stones are small enough to be passed this way.
To those stones that are not able to pass on their own, the least invasive kidney stone treatment is known as lithotripsy. This method is done while the patient is under a light anesthesia, commonly referred to as a twilight sleep. The procedure consists of shock waves which pass through the body and break up the kidney stone. The patient is then sent back home to rest, drink enough fluids and pass the stone fragments purely though their urinary tract.
A different type of kidney stone treatment that may be used is known as ureteroscopy. What will happen is, the surgeon will pass a tube called ureteroscope up through the urinary tract where he will then use instruments to break the stone so that it can easily be removed. This is most commonly used when the stones have gone out of the kidney and into the ureter.
A method known as a PCNL, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy, is one kidney stone remedy that is a lot more invasive. The surgeon may perform this procedure for larger kidney stones. In this procedure, the surgeon makes a cut in the patient's back and injects a narrow telescope into the kidney. The surgeon will then break the stone up and take it away. This process is used in cases of huge stones or in case the lithotripsy does not work.
Although rarely used, oftentimes the surgeon may also make a cut in the side so that he can reach the kidneys. This enables him to easily remove the stone. This type of kidney stone treatment is seldom needed.
It is not uncommon for someone that has developed a kidney stone and has had a kidney stone remedy to form more stones at a later time. Roughly half of the people that have a kidney stone will develop a new one within 5 years unless measures are taken to prevent them. This could simply be by drinking much more fluids or taking meds that help your prevent your body from forming new stones.
Experiencing kidney stones can be an unpleasant experience. Kidney stone remedies vary from a simple round of pain medicine and extra fluids to more invasive procedures and long healing times. Regardless of what kidney stone treatment is chosen, working closely with your urologist will be an excellent course of action.
