Iscar Develops An Leading Edge Line Of High Performance Carbide Grades For Heightened Productivity

A cutting edge family of Iscar turning inserts brings Sumo Tec performance and durability to CVD and DVD carbide grades. In identical tests in a variety of turning applications, the inserts outlasted their nearest competitors by 26 to 288 percent. The key to the lengthened life is the Sumo Tec special treatment, introduced in late 2007 in a constricted range of milling inserts, that perfects the coated surface and reduces surface tension stresses in insert coatings. These lead cooler running, better chipping resistance, reduced built up edge and reliably longer edge life in all workpiece metals. During the alumina coating process, internal tension stresses occasionally cause cracks. The brand new Sumo Tec treatment leads to compression stresses, which helps to seal those cracks. The seven new Sumo Tec turning grades consist of 2 for cast iron; three for steel and 1 for heat-resistant alloys & hardened steel. All the most desired insert geometries are available from stock, with new geometries being added regularly. Iscar also plans to add new grades as well.

Here are the grades available:

FOR CAST IRON
IC5005, with a hard substrate, MTCVD TiCN and thick Al2O3 coating, is endorsed mainly for nodular cast iron. It also handles other cast irons at medium to high cutting speeds at stable or slightly unstable conditions. This grade may be used in hard cast irons when especially high wear resistance is imperative.

IC5010, presenting a tough substrate, MTCVD TiCN and thick Al2O3 coating, targets grey cast iron. It is recommended for interrupted cuts and unstable turning conditions in other materials.

FOR STEEL
IC8150, consisting of a very hard substrate with a cobalt enriched outer layer, MTCVD TiCN and a thick alpha Al2O3 CVD coating. Featuring exceptional thermal stability and resistance to chipping, this grade is recommended for high speed turning of steel subjugated to stable or slightly unstable conditions. It can also deal with stainless steel and interrupted cuts in nodular cast iron.

IC8250, a tough substrate with the same outer layers. It features exceptional thermal stability and resistance to plastic deformation and is recommended for general machining of alloyed and stainless steel in a wide range of conditions.

IC8350, featuring a very tough substrate under the same outer layers. It delivers exceptional shock resistance and ample wear resistance on alloyed and stainless steel.

For Alloys, Stainless Steel and Hardened Steel
IC807, with a tough submicron substrate under a TiAlN PVD coating, is proper for turning heat resistant alloys, austenitic stainless steel and hard steel at low to medium cutting speeds. In a test opposite to its nearest competitor on all three materials, the improvement in tool life was up to 150%.

Key Test Results
Prior to launching the new SUMO TEC turning tool line, ISCAR tested all grades against their closest competitors in a range of operations. Here are the crucial results for grades 5005 and 5010 in cast iron. The improvement was 47% in SAE 1045 steel and 250% in 4140. In forging steel, the new Sumo Tec insert lasted twice as long.
