Excessive And Irresponsible Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Constructive Change



It took more than a few years but Sarah at long last decided that she had enough with her husband's careless drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home late at night from drinking rather than spending time with her and their two sons. She was also tired of the third DUI Keith recently received. Moreover she was tired of making justifications for Keith when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his abusive and unhealthy drinking.

In a similar manner, she was worried about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking. And finally she was tired of the unstable financial dilemma into which he had put his family because of his careless drinking behavior.

One Friday morning when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something to cut into the unhealthy cycle of Keith's careless and abusive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol rehab" and discovered a number of treatment facilities that were all located less than 40 miles away from where she and Keith lived.

When Sarah called each rehabilitation clinic she identified who she was and stated that Keith, her spouse, was involved in excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her husband had a top-rate health insurance program at his job and that residential or outpatient alcoholism treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health plan called for the treatment.

After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's abusive and hazardous drinking, the physician in a supportive but resolute way told Sarah how she may have played a major role in her husband's abusive drinking through the years. How? Basically by covering for him instead of letting him experience the consequences of his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior.

In a word, the therapist told Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The doctor also underscored the point that Sarah could not control Keith's actions. With the guidance and support of the treatment team at the rehab facility, conversely, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's careless and excessive drinking but she could also learn how to help him make an appointment at the treatment clinic so that he could go over his abusive drinking behavior with a doctor.

The good news was that after Sarah revealed this to her husband and he saw that she meant business, he told her that he had been very concerned about his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was very relieved to know that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his careless and excessive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a therapist at the local alcohol treatment clinic.

While simply calling a rehabilitation center does not guarantee that a person's careless and excessive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more open to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is obviously an indispensable step in the rehab process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting therapy for his excessive and abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly increased.
