A Woman Manifest Symptoms Of Depression And Alcohol Dependency And Schedules An Appointment To See Her Doctor

Cindy was a thirty-seven-year-old financial planner who realized that she had a problem with her drinking. For instance, within the past six months she has experienced the need to have more than a few drinks before going to work, a week ago she failed a random hair alcohol test at work, five weeks ago she got stopped by the police for "driving under the influence", and last but not least, for the last five months she has started to forget what she says and does when she drinks.

Like many other drinkers, Cindy's involvement with alcohol began gradually and continued at this pace for quite a long time due to the fact that every so often she engaged in occasional social drinking. In reality, for almost ten months, every time she went out with her pals to drink, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her drinking behavior, nevertheless, seemed to radically change when her husband divorced her.

Cindy got very down in the dumps about the loss of her husband, and as a way to refrain from fixating on her negative feelings she made up her mind that she would start hanging around more often with some of her buddies who love to drink and have fun. It didn't take too long, nevertheless, before her drinking increased to a significant degree the more frequently she went to and drank at happy hours, family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, and private parties with her buddies.

In a word, she was having a blast drinking just like everybody else in her group of buddies without too much deliberation regarding the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been experiencing. Yet somewhere in her mind she knew about the adverse alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she more likely than not required alcohol counseling but kept away from the thought as much as possible.

One day during her yearly physical, her healthcare practitioner asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her doctor, Cindy "came clean" and said that she routinely drinks more than she should. If truth be told, she stated that she frequently drinks in an excessive and irresponsible manner. Then Cindy told her healthcare practitioner about her melancholy. More precisely, she articulated that wrecked relationships often triggered a negative sequence of events characterized by increased drinking which further led to more dismal feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is explicitly what took place when her husband and she got divorced two years ago.

Cindy's doctor then stated the following: "I am not trying to make a snap analysis, but with your medical situation we may be dealing with two separate problems. As a consequence, I think we should make an appointment for you to get an alcohol abuse and alcoholism assessment from my partner, Dr. Franks, who is an alcohol abuse and substance abuse specialist."

"Whether your drinking circumstance is more related to alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse is unknown at this time, but I believe that further exploration is warranted. Then I believe we ought to schedule an appointment for you to get a psychological examination from another one of my partners, Dr. Carlson, who is a counseling psychologist."

"I need to get some more information about your depression and see how much your drinking and depression are related." Cindy expressed her agreement with her physician's plan of attack and thanked him for his assistance and concern.
