A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Pals, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Finds Out That Listening In Class Can Make A Difference



Andy was a ninth grader who usually seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and frequently wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The primary holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore legally able to drive a vehicle and to drink alcohol.

Andy, then again, had a tough time understanding that as a fifteen-year-old individual he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, however, Andy frequently drank with his guy friends after school, particularly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his cronies was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and all of the guys went to a recreational area and drank for approximately two hours.

After drinking around nine glasses of wine, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the baseball field, one of his friends called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms. Stated briefly, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite flabbergasted to learn that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had around five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he articulated this to the attending physician at the hospital, nevertheless, the healthcare professional told Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour period of time could in reality be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare practitioner further explained how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this takes place, a person can expire.

This was the first sign to Andy that he was drinking in a risky fashion and that there are consequences for such activities. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a lucky young man because he almost died from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The healthcare practitioner also spoke to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehab for Andy. His parents were overjoyed that Andy was safe and sound and told the doctor that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol therapy.

While talking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a special reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week at school.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, then again, he felt that he should have listened more closely in class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go to school and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to something that was as significant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
